A unique range of true scale ARTF models
manufactured in the Philippines in now available in U.K
|
|
These outstanding models are imported and distributed by Midlands
Model Products and are available from Shrewsbury Model Centre. The
brains behind the manufacturing operation at Lapu-Lapu City in central
Philippine are Goran Kaldersen (who settled from Sweden) and Thomas P.
Welch, who formed K & W Model Airplanes Inc. and trained 27 local
people in the art/technique of precision semi-mass production
aeromodelling. K & W cut and prepare all their own balsa wood,
which is locally grown on Mindanao Island. All the aircraft in the
range are designed to 1/5th scale and range from 63" (1600mm) to
104" (2642mm). All have been designed basically for R/C flying
and are all "early aviation" types over the historical
period 1903-1933. There are presently 14 models in the range, although
not all, as yet are available in U.K. Models can be supplied, to
order, in various states of completion, including complete uncovered
airframes, fully fabric covered (Solartex) and painted in the basic
colour scheme relevant to the type, or covered but unpainted. A
further four models are likely to be available later in the year.

Thulin K (1916) |
Thulin was the founding Swedish aviation manufacturer, producing their
type "K" in 1917 as a trainer type for the Swedish Air
Corps. The type features "all-flying" (no separate elevator)
tailplane and the wing warping used on the full size in lieu of
ailerons is reproduced in the model which spans 72" (1800mm) and
suits .46-.60 two stroke motors or .60-.80 four strokes.

001 Tummelisa 1920 |
The Tummelisa was a 1919 Swedish trainer built by the Swedish Army
Aircraft Factory. A total of 30 were built and an example still exists
as the Swedish Air Force museum, in Linkoping. K & W's model spans
63" (1580mm) and suits .46-.60 two stroke motors or .60-.80 four
strokes. Four function R/C gear is required.

|
Morane Saulnier L |
The Morane Saulnier was an early user of machine gun interrupter
gear, then copied (and improved) by Germany, being applied to the
Fokker E III (the Fokker scourge!) The aircraft was originally
designed for surveillance and artillery spotting, for which, the
parasol wing layout was ideal. K & W's model spans 86.8"
(220mm). Recommended power is .46-.60 two stroke motors or .60-.80
four strokes.

|
Thulin Type D |
The Thulin Type D was a Swedish licensed built version of the
Morane Saulnier Type L. to which a more streamlinedcowl was applied.
It spans spans 86.8" (220mm) and recommended power is .46-.60 two
stroke motors or .60-.80 four strokes. Price TBA

Bleriot XI 1909 |
The youth of today may think they're very trendy with their peaked
caps on back to front, but Louis Bleriot beat them all to it by most
of a Century! K & W's model is the Bleriot cross-channel version
with a wing span of 63.2: (1600mm) and again suits .46-.60 two stroke
motors or .60-.80 four strokes.

Pfalz E-1 |
This early WW1 scout entered service and paralleled the Fokker E-III
"Eindekker". The prototype was actually French -a licensed
built copy of the Morane Saulnier Type H! It was one of the first to
use an interrupter gear linked to the single forward firing machine
gun. The 1/5th scale model spans 72" (1800mm) and weighs in at
about 8 lbs ready to fly.

Thomas Morse S-4c Scout |
Although christened "Scout", the S-4c was actually a
trainer type designed in 1916 for the U.S. Signals Corps. It was
widely used as a training machine and, post WW1, as a flying school
machine and sports aircraft. The 63.8" (1620mm) span model
features four function controls and weighs all-up at 9 lbs with
.46-.60 two stroke motor or .60-.80 four stroke. Price to be announced

|
Nieuport 17-C1 |
Possibly the most famous of all French WW1 fighting scouts, no
self respecting range of WW1 kit models would be complete without a
model of the Nieuport 17, since the type was, arguably, one of the
most attractive types of that era. This 1/5th scale K & W model
spans 66" (1650mm) and, with four function R/C equipment, weighs
about 8.5 lbs with .46-.60 two stroke motor or .60-.80 four stroke.

One of the ambitious models
in the K & W range in their Bristol F2B, finely detail as the
pictures below reveal.
|
|
|
|
Bristol F2B "Brisfit" |
For British scale enthusiasts, the Bristol F2B is possibly the
most evocative model in the K & W range, and the biggest, with a
wing span of 94" (2390mm). This one weighs in at 16 lbs ready to
go, with full four function radio and .60 -.90 two stroke motor or
.90-.120 four stroke. For year 2000, there are likely to be two full
size Brisfits flying in U.K., the one owned and flown for many years
by the Shuttleworth Museum at Old Warden and another owned by The
Fighter Collection at Duxford, which should kindle new interest in the
type. Price to be announced.
